what i’m reading
This week I haven’t had time to read because I have been in Miami all week at an adult industry convention. I’ve been out of my normal reading and writing routine, but I have had the opportunity to attend a lot of panels about everything from the state of the adult industry, to the laws impacting sex workers, to the way to boost business, to the future of technology.
It was fun to see old friends that I haven’t seen since before the pandemic, and to spend time with new ones. I also got some sun and ate a lot of good food!
what I’m thinking about
As some of you probably know, I got my start in the industry as a content creator and cam model. While I no longer do that kind of work (whether I have quit or am just on a prolonged break is yet to be determined), I do consider it a large part of my identity and a formative part of my career. For that reason, it was very fun to be among so many content creators and models for the week. I went back to my roots.
It was interesting, though, to see how different the concerns are between folks who only do content creation, and those, like myself, who also (or primarily) do in-person work. Sitting in on panels where lawyers were suggesting increased surveillance (often with cameras) as a solution to workplace disputes was jarring. I can’t imagine anything that I would advocate for less! It also reminded me that if we are going to get anywhere in terms of rights for sex workers, we need to have voices from all sectors of the industry and from all demographics represented because there are obvious blind spots when we are only viewing things from a single perspective.
what I’m excited for
This coming week I have good friends and colleagues traveling to Pittsburgh and will enjoy spending time playing tour guide. I’m looking forward to taking walks through the city, seeing a show, and eating good food.
